Baby Orang
Utan - STBpic
If
you want to see an orang utan, one of the best places to
meet these cuddly ginger apes is the Matang Wildlife Centre
on the western corner of the Kubah National Park.
Covering
180 hectares of lowland forest, the centre allows orang
utans and other local fauna to live in their natural
surroundings. Although the public can visit the centre
and see orang utans and other animals, it is not a
zoo.
Its
main function is to rehabilitate endangered species, such as
orang utans, confiscated from members of the public who
illegally kept them as pets. After some time in captivity,
these animals can no longer fend for themselves and have to
be taught how to live off the jungle, their natural habitat.
But, while they are being educated, they become used to the
approach of humans. So, at the centre, you will see animals
you might not spot in days of wandering the jungle. The
centre also caters for researchers from local and overseas
universities as well as nature studies by local schools or
groups of interested adults.
While
the orang utans and other animals are the main attractions
the centre has a lot more to offer. Attractions include:
- A
series of rock pool
- Swimming
area
- Picnic
spots
- Camping
sites
- Scenic
nature trails
- Three
Waterfalls
- Viewing
area
- Enclosures
for viewing semi wild animals
