Befitting its ceremonial role, this impressive edifice was constructed from belian (commonly known as ironwood - a tropical hard wood reputed to be the hardest wood in the world and the wood of choice for building longhouses). The beautifully ornate engravings on the roof are based on traditional tribal motifs.

Originally, in 1847, this was the site of a mission, which was turned into a judicial administration office. The mission was demolished in 1858 and two more buildings were put up in its place before the Court House came into being.

All State Council meetings were held in the Court House between 1878 and 1973.

Formerly housed the court house and the magistrate's court and several government offices, it is now turned to Tourism Complex and was officially opened on 23rd July 2003.
